A night guard is a custom-made appliance which fits on your teeth (upper or lower). This appliance covers the chewing surfaces of your teeth to prevent contact between opposing dentition. Therefore, the upper teeth no longer contact the lower teeth, rather they come in contact with the outer surface of the night guard.

Night guards aid in release of tension in the temporomandibular joints, muscle relaxation and prevention of wear in the dentition.

A dentist may recommend a night guard if there is unusual wear patterns on your teeth, if you have sore muscles of mastication (chewing), joint pain and/or have a habit of clenching and bruxing (grinding).
